Personally, I love reading. It takes me to places I’ve never been. I get to know people I’ve never met, and it opens different parts of my imagination that I never knew existed. It’s like going on a wild ride or vacation and you never have to leave the comfort of your own home.
What really blows my mind are the reading statistics. Last year over 25% of Americans never even read a single book. (HUH!) I consider books my friends. They accompany me everywhere I go. I never know when I might get a few unexpected minutes during the day I can use to read and escape the mundane of life.
Now that we have e-books, everyone should be able to read their favorites. Most of us own a smartphone that carries those great e-book apps. You now can download whatever genre you prefer. You might like fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, sci-fi or romance but there will never be a shortage of books, EVER!
It raises your IQ
Research has shown that children who read early are exposed to 50% more words than watching TV or talking with adults. If they continue with those good reading habits, they have higher test scores and a higher IQ. Reading helps you learn good grammar, and it’s a way one can see a craft in its perfect form.
It’s exercise for the brain
Just like our bodies need exercise to stay healthy; so do our brains. When we read, it’s like we’re mentally jogging, keeping our brain in shape. It helps fight against memory loss, keeps the synapses firing correctly and boosts brain power.
Reading relieves stress
When we read, you lose yourself in the author’s imagination. It helps us escape the stress of our daily lives by forgetting our problems for a while. By sitting still and engrossing your thoughts, it triggers your imagination and awakens different parts of the brain. It really doesn’t’ matter what we read, just that we’re reading.
It helps you fall asleep
When we read, it’s a signal to the brain that it’s time to unwind. If we make it a ritual, it’s even more beneficial than zoning out in front of a TV screen. A real book, not an E-reader, is even better for your eyes and will help you shift into sleep much easier.
It helps you understand others
When we read, we learn how other people think, how they feel, how they would handle certain situations and what makes them unique. It can help us with our social skills by making us more empathetic toward others.
